Proctor Trivette has used this idea from one of his favorite movies as not only a motto, but a business practice. When he started South of the James Productions in 2009, his goal was to take people’s ideas and visions and conveying them through engaging imagery, camera work, and sound. He also wanted to provide quality service at costs that people can afford. Along the way he’s learned a great deal about filmmaking and loves to share his adventures and his advice with others along the way. It’s hard to keep his passion about filmmaking to himself.

Over the years he’s experienced some crazy things. He filmed a wedding once where the bride and groom dressed as superheroes.

“When the bride made her entrance at the reception she was carried by all the groomsmen and acted like she was flying in. They had such a great time and the wedding was a huge hit.” Proctor laughs. “That’s what it’s all about.”

Proctor suggests that anyone who wants to get into the film business should find a mentor. “They’re invaluable.” He says. “Find someone who has years and years of experience and then ask a lot of questions. You’d be surprised what you can learn.”

Proctor studied film for two years at the University of the North Carolina Wilmington before transferring to Randolph-Macon College. Prior to attending Randolph-Macon, he directed, produced, and wrote a short film titled Nothing More to Lose. It was an eye opening experience, only strengthening his love and passion for the art of filmmaking.

Proctor currently lives in Richmond, VA with his wife, Christen, who has been his inspiration and biggest supporter. He continues to grow creatively and technically by working with talented individuals as a location sound recordist and mixer, editor, and camera operator. He is currently certified in Final Cut Pro 7 and DVD Studio Pro 4 and is continuing to pursue additional certifications.
